The Flats

Flats fishing is considered the most challenging by many anglers. A combination of hunting and fishing, test both guide and angler in first finding the fish and then being able to present the bait or fly without sending the fish streaking for deep water. The Florida Keys offers a huge expanse of flats sandbars and grass banks. These areas are prime feeding grounds for schools of bonefish, permit, tarpon, cuda, and shark.

Flats fishing is best done from a small skiff that can be pushed quietly in shallow water. While on the flats, the angler is privileged to some of the most beautiful eco system remaining in the United States today.

A combination of tackle is used on the flats. The most popular is light spin, but fly fishing is fast becoming just as popular and has opened up a new line of rods, reels, flylines, and flies. At A1A sportfishing, we offer Loomis rods, Able, Tibor fly reels and for the spinfisherhman, Loomis rods and Shimano reels

Getting to the fishing Grounds with a smooth and dry ride for our clients was carefully considered when selecting our flats boats. Our 17 foot Maverick Mirage II gets in super shallow water with zero hull slap which enables you to get in close casting distance to your fish. Our Hewes Light Tackle 20 foot has more room for a third angler and is great for live baiting tarpon in the channels. Both of these boats are new with 2001 motors.
